First Consultation: What Happens, What to Bring, and Costs
By Viva Beauty Esthetics | September 9, 2026
Serving Downey, including East Downey along the Telegraph Road corridor near the Paramount border.

One thing I hear all the time is that people love having an esthetician who’s knowledgeable about products and skin types, and who can chat when you want, but also gives you quiet time when you need it. If you’re feeling a little nervous about your first consultation, that’s normal. Most people just don’t want to waste money, get talked into something, or walk out more confused than when they walked in.
Here’s the simple version. In your first consultation, I’ll go over your concerns and health history, look at your skin closely, and explain what I think will help, what it costs, and what the realistic timeline looks like. It’s usually a 20 to 45 minute visit, and you’ll leave with clear next steps, not pressure.
Before your consultation: 6 things to bring (and 2 to skip)
If you want the most accurate recommendations, a little prep helps. I keep it practical because most of my clients are juggling work, kids, and commute time on the I-5 or I-605.
- A list of medications and supplements, especially anything for acne, hormones, or inflammation.
- Recent treatments like peels, waxing, microdermabrasion, dermaplaning, or new prescriptions.
- Photos of your skin on “good days” and “bad days, ” plus any inspiration for your skin goals.
- Your current products (a quick photo of the labels is fine). This helps me spot what’s helping and what might be causing irritation.
- A short list of questions you want answered. If it’s on your mind, it belongs on the list.
- Your schedule reality. Tell me if you need quick lunchtime options near Telegraph Road and the Paramount border, or if weekends near Downey Landing work better.
Two things to skip: heavy makeup and guessing. Please come in with a clean face, no makeup, so I can assess your skin accurately. And if you’re not sure what a product is or how often you use it, just tell me. I’d rather work with the truth than a perfect routine that doesn’t exist.
Inside your 20 to 45 minute consultation: skin analysis, options, and real numbers
When you arrive, I’ll start with a quick conversation about what brought you in. Some people want help with texture, clogged pores, or dehydration. Others are focused on dark spots and discoloration. I also ask about your day-to-day, because your skin doesn’t live in a vacuum.
Step 1: I listen first
I’ll ask about sensitivity, breakouts, dryness, and what you’ve tried. If you’re not a “talk the whole time” person, that’s fine. A long-time client put it perfectly when they said I make “great conversation when applicable” and also allow quiet time when needed. That’s the vibe I keep in the room.
Step 2: skin analysis up close
Next, I’ll assess your skin. This is why the clean face matters. I’m looking at hydration, congestion, uneven tone, and how your skin reacts. If I see that you’d benefit from a facial plan, I’ll explain what that might look like and what each step is doing.
If we move from consultation into a facial plan, I’ll walk you through the building blocks I use in my facial room: deep cleansing to remove impurities, exfoliating to lift dead skin cells, massage for circulation and relaxation, and masks and finishing products that support your specific skin needs. I often start with steam or a warm towel because it softens follicles and helps products penetrate more effectively.
Step 3: recommendations, risks, downtime, and costs
You’ll get options. I’ll explain what I recommend, why I’m recommending it, and what to expect afterward. We’ll talk about things like patch tests, timing between appointments, and any downtime if it applies to what you’re considering. We’ll also talk about cost in plain language. No vague answers. And no pressure to buy products or lock in a package on the spot.
“From the moment I entered the salon, I was greeted by Vanessa who made me feel welcome and comfortable. She listened attentively to my skincare concerns and provided valuable insights on the best treatment options for my specific needs.”
one of our regulars
If you want to get even more specific about the timing piece, I broke it down in how long a consultation takes. And if you’re still deciding between starting with a consultation or jumping straight into a service, consultation vs. facial will help you choose without second-guessing.
After your consultation: what you’ll notice, and how I keep the plan simple
Right after a consultation, the biggest “result” tends to be mental. You finally know what’s going on with your skin and what to do next. If we do a same-day service or schedule one soon after, that’s when you’ll typically start noticing the glow, the smoother feel, and that clean, hydrated finish people talk about.
Clients regularly tell me their skin feels smoother, and some mention they start getting compliments on their skin after sessions. One person kept it simple: facials have improved their skin and they love it. That’s what I’m aiming for, results you can actually see and feel.
General aftercare I usually recommend: keep your skincare gentle for the next day or two, focus on hydration, and don’t pile on new actives all at once. If you’re prone to sensitivity, I’ll tell you what to pause and what to keep consistent so you don’t undo the progress.
If you like having a plan written out, you’ll appreciate this part. People mention that I send them off with upkeep tips and even a list of what to do between visits. If you want that kind of structure, take a look at consultation aftercare and your skin plan for a clear idea of what “next steps” can look like.
East Downey consultation tips I’ll tell you straight: patch tests, parking, and zero pressure
If you’re coming to me along Telegraph Road near the Paramount border, tell me what your timing looks like. I’ll help you pick a slot that fits your life, especially if you’re squeezing this into a lunch break or trying to make it work after work off the I-5 or I-605.
Here’s something people don’t always expect. I’m not here to sell you a shelf of products. I’m here to make a positive impact on how you feel in your own skin. If you want to take the recommendations and think on it, do that. A lot of first-timers end up becoming regulars because they felt taken care of the first time, not cornered.
My quick patch test rule of thumb
Ask me directly if a patch test makes sense for what you’re considering. Sometimes we can do it during the consultation, and sometimes it’s smarter to schedule it separately based on the product or service. I’ll explain the why so you’re not guessing.
If you’re comparing options in the area: I work with clients coming in from Bellflower, Paramount, Norwalk, South Gate, Pico Rivera, and Lakewood. If you want a quick overview of what a consultation can cover in our space, read consultation services in East Downey.
Ready for a consultation that feels clear, calm, and worth your time?
If it’s your first time, I want you to leave feeling informed and comfortable. Bring your product photos, come with a clean face, and tell me what you’re hoping to change. I’ll take it from there.
To schedule, reach out and let me know what your main skin concern is and how soon you’re hoping to start. If you’re trying to fit it in around work or weekend errands near Downey Landing, tell me that too.
