Hydro-Facial/Microdermabrasion Aftercare: 48-Hour Do's and Don'ts
By Viva Beauty Esthetics | August 1, 2026
East Downey along the Telegraph Road corridor near the Paramount border
One rule matters most in the first 48 hours after microdermabrasion: protect your fresh skin from sun and heat. We hear all the time that people love how carefully we treat them during their facial, and this is where that care continues at home. Keep things gentle, keep skin clean, and keep SPF on. That’s how you hold onto that smooth, glowy look you came in for here in Downey.
Our Hydro-Facial/Microdermabrasion is a 90-minute, 3-step hydro-facial using diamond tip or acrylic tip fluid dermabrasion with powered vacuum exfoliation, oxygen-infused serums for hydration, and a cooling wand to calm and tighten the look of pores. It’s non-invasive, but your skin still needs smart aftercare.
Your first 24 to 48 hours after a microderm facial (keep it simple)
Think of the first two days as “quiet time” for your skin. We’ve exfoliated and cleaned out buildup, so your barrier can feel a little more reactive than usual.
48-hour do’s
- Wash gently with a mild, fragrance-free cleanser and lukewarm water. Pat dry.
- Hydrate with a simple serum like hyaluronic acid and a gentle moisturizer.
- Wear SPF 30+ every morning. In Downey’s sunny summers, reapply if you’ll be outdoors, even for quick errands.
- Drink water, especially when Santa Ana winds roll through and everything feels drier, including your skin.
48-hour don’ts
- No makeup right away, especially heavy foundation, powders, or anything that “sets” hard.
- Skip sweating and heat: no intense workouts, saunas, or hot yoga. Heat can keep redness around longer.
- Avoid pools and hot tubs (chlorine and bacteria are not your friend right now).
- Don’t exfoliate again: no scrubs, cleansing brushes, or “peel pads.” Your skin already did the work.
Quick tip for our East Downey clients who swing by along the Telegraph Road corridor at lunch or after work: keep a small SPF in your bag or car. Reapplying takes 20 seconds and saves your results.
Days 3 to 7: keep the glow, don’t chase it with actives
This is the week where people are tempted to pile on products because their skin feels so smooth. Keep the routine steady. A lot of our regulars tell us they start getting compliments after their facial, and we want you to keep hearing them.
What’s normal
- Mild redness or tightness the first day or two.
- A little sensitivity when you wash or apply product.
- Light flaking can happen for some people. Don’t pick it.
What to avoid for 5 to 7 days
- Retinol and exfoliating acids (glycolic, lactic, salicylic). Give your skin time to calm first.
- Abrasive scrubs and anything that tingles or burns.
- Vitamin C serums if you’re feeling sensitive. Some skin is fine, but many people get extra sting right after exfoliation.
- Direct sun as much as possible. Hat plus SPF is a great combo, especially in warm weather.
And if you’re driving in from Bellflower, Paramount, Norwalk, Pico Rivera, Lakewood, or South Gate, treat that car time like “sun time.” UV still adds up on your commute.
The routine we like after facial and microdermabrasion (AM and PM)
You don’t need a 12-step routine after a Hydro-Facial/Microdermabrasion. You need the right basics, done consistently.
Morning (AM)
- Gentle cleanse
- Hydrating serum (hyaluronic acid works well for a lot of skin types)
- Moisturizer
- Broad-spectrum SPF 30+ every single day
Night (PM)
- Gentle cleanse (double cleanse only if you wore makeup later in the week and your skin feels calm)
- Hydrating serum
- Moisturizer, a little richer if you run dry
If you’ve had dryness in the past, stick with fragrance-free and avoid alcohol-based toners for a bit. Simple usually wins here.
If something feels off after microdermabrasion, reach out to us
Mild redness and sensitivity tend to ease within a couple of days. We’re more interested in the stuff that gets worse, not better.
Reach out the same day if you notice worsening swelling, blistering, severe pain, pus, or anything that looks like infection. Don’t tough it out.
“Amazing work, I always feel taken care of.”
one of our regulars
That “taken care of” feeling shouldn’t stop when you walk out the door. If you’re unsure about makeup timing, products you already use at home, or you’re seeing a reaction you didn’t expect, let us know. We’ll talk it through and keep your skin on track.
Ready to keep your glow consistent?
Our Hydro-Facial/Microdermabrasion is 90 minutes and $115. If you’re aiming for smoother texture, deep hydration, and that clean-skin feel people keep complimenting, this is a solid monthly reset for a lot of skin types.
